Winning with Women- Run for Office!

Have you ever wondered why there aren’t more women elected to public office?  In spite of (nationally) having the right to vote for nearly 100 years, women are still underrepresented in our elected officials.  Why is that?  According to local group Colorado 50/50, “When women run for office, they win just as often as men win. So why aren’t there more women in office? Because they don’t run!”

We are happy to promote the Northern Colorado 50/50’s efforts to support more women running for office here in Colorado.  Read on to hear how they’re going to do it and how you can get involved!

Once women are in office, they’re good for the system. They seek more citizen input. They tend to facilitate and encourage cooperation, instead of reinforcing the hierarchy. They support legislation benefiting women, children and families.

To address the challenges we face today, we don’t just want more women in office – we need more women in office.

We are going to demystify the process of running by holding an event – Winning with Women – that will feature a panel discussion of elected women officials along with a networking session. In the panel discussion, we will hear how women decided to run and what their experiences were both on the campaign trail and in office.

Panelists Include

  • Betsy Markey, former member of the U.S. House of Representatives
  • Susan Kirkpatrick, former mayor of Fort Collins

After the panel discussion, we plan to move into an intentional networking session – like speed networking. Bring a stack of business cards! In the room will be women who are curious about running and those who want to support other women running.

Join us on Saturday, May 6, for Winning with Women!

  • Doors open at 2:30 p.m. – see informational displays with maps and articles
  • Panel begins at 3:00 p.m. with networking to follow.
  • Foothills Unitarian Church (1815 Yorktown Avenue, Fort Collins, CO, 80526)

We will be helping empower local women and getting them on a path to serving in both appointed and elected offices. We invite you to attend and bring a friend!
