At its meeting on March 8, 2018, the LWVCO Board voted to adopt the LWVUS Mission and Value Statements and deferred adopting the LWVUS Value Statement as follows:
Our Mission: Empowering Voters. Defending Democracy.
Our Vision: We envision a democracy where every person has the desire, the right, the knowledge, and the confidence to participate.
Our Value Statement: The League believes in the power of women to create a more perfect democracy. [Underlining added.]
Several members of our LWVLC and other local Colorado LWVs notified LWVUS and LWVCO of their opposition to the LWVUS Value Statement on grounds that it is sexist, gender biased and fails to recognize the contributions of men who are LWV members.
The LWVCO Board has decided to defer its vote on the Value Statement until after its Strategic Planning Retreat on April 25, 2018. Members may raise this matter at the LWVLC Annual Meeting on April 30, 2018, at 6 pm at Pathways Hospice. The LWVCO Board decision to adopt the the Mission and Vision statements was based on information in the LWVUS Transformation Roadmap and Transformation Action Steps.
Those two documents provide state and local Leagues with important information on the LWVUS Transformation process and plans. Specifically in the Transformation Action Steps under Strategic Focus, Goal 1 2017/18, it states the following:
State and local Leagues: All state and local Leagues adopt use of the new mission and vision statements in all communications, including websites.
